3D printing

Posted: August 14, 2011 in All about linux, Internet

what is 3D printing?

3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a three dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printers are generally faster, more affordable and easier to use than other additive manufacturing technologies. 3D printers offer product developers the ability to print parts and assemblies made of several materials with different mechanical and physical properties in a single build process

it basically a printer that can print stuff made of plastics in accordance to the model that was inputed. so if you input a wrench made of iron into this printer then what would come out of this printer would be a wrench made of plastic and it mimics exactly the same shape as its iron model. the plastic wrench is like a porcelain — basically calcium carbonate with some vinyl compounds. Then you dunk the whole thing in superglue, which infuses the part and makes it very strong. so you can use this new plastic to wrench a screw driver.

you can see the video of wrench-making part here Read the rest of this entry »

Dictator’s handbook

Mao Tse-tung, half-length portrait, seated, fa...

this time I wanted to talk about many types of dictator based on the book that I had been reading. The Dictator’s handbook.

there are 2 type of dictator, a benevolent dictator and non-benevolent dictator. A benevolent dictator is a dictator that has kindly feeling towards his own country. we can take an examples of Lee Kuan Yew in singapore.  many people regards him as an honest man who doesn’t suck away money from his country to secret bank account overseas, the money that his control were spent on policy of good idea and fortunately he has good idea on his mind towards his own country that is singapore. and this in turn can make Lee Kuan Yew to be called a benevolent dictator.

and the opposite of benevolent dictator such Mao Zedong with his stupid idea of china that killed many people when he’s in power, also Nikita Kruschev in Uni Soviet back then who also has the same stupid idea when it come to running their own country and also during Soeharto era in indonesia. These are the 3 dictators that has a certain desire to accumulate power and wealth during their reign. Read the rest of this entry »

Big Mac Index

Big Mac hamburgers, like this one from Japan, ...

Image via Wikipedia

what is big mac index?

The Big Mac Index is published by The Economist as an informal way of measuring the purchasing power parity (PPP) between two currencies and provides a test of the extent to which market exchange rates result in goods costing the same in different countries. It “seeks to make exchange-rate theory a bit more digestible”

it is used as a comparison between the value of two currency. and also big mac is a global food that everyone loves at McDonald’s. let me take an example then.

in singapore, the price of Big Mac is more or less $7,03 and in indonesia the price of big mac is more or less Rp. 35000

so we can calculate it by using 35000 / 7,03 = 4978,67 then this number was substract by the exchange current rates and divide by the current rate also. the local current rate of 1 singapore dollar to indonesian rupiah is 7.064

(4978,67 – 7.064) / 7.064 * 100 = -29%

so we can deduce by using Big Mac Index that indonesia rupiah was undervalues for as much as 29% against singapore dollar. and this also means that the livelihood of daily singaporean is too expensive than in indonesia. for more Big Mac Index you can refer to this site

pretty useful right? :-)

nuclear energy

Laguna Verde nuclear power plant — a BWR

Image via Wikipedia

for me nowadays I had been infatuated with nuclear energy, especially since the aftermath of Fukushima. I did research on nuclear and find myself to fully support the use of nuclear energy as a replacement for conventional energy use such as coal and winds. because coal can cause climate change due to its ash residue and winds isn’t strong enough for heavy energy usage whilst nuclear is very safe for the environment.

for 25 years after the chernobyl disaster, nuclear energy has been very safe to use because it has learnt from its past mistake. also the company that produce nuclear equipment, westinghouse, has provide nuclear equipment for nuclear plant, they had designed the safety standards for each containment that has uranium core in it. and it case an earthquake happened then the nuclear containment would shutdown immediately. but there is a design flaw in fukushima nuclear power plant. the Diesel generator that powered the nuclear container failed to operate in case of cold shutdown of nuclear reactor because it wasn’t flood proof. the tsunami wreaked the diesel generator that in turn made the nuclear container went hot because it wasn’t cold enough to shut down. and this made the uranium core to melt and leaked radiation surrounding the area.

it should be noted that during this fukushima crisis there were no official record of human fatality caused by extreme radiation exposure. only there were reports of some people exposed to radiation but were treated immediately. and no deaths has been reported due to fukushima disaster although in chernobyl there were many deaths but in fukushima there were none reported, this should make people feel safe when it come to talk about nuclear energy as it is very safe for usage. Nuclear is the safest energy one could have.

this world needs nuclear energy as a sustainable development of energy source that human gravely needed.

ancient egypt

Posted: July 27, 2011 in All about linux, Internet

Been listening to BBC radio lately and I happened to listened to a podcast about the university of oxford that has published a sets of papyri containing hundred of ancients egypt’s history.

dfds

Hundreds of thousands of images have gone on display on a website which encourages armchair archaeologists to help catalogue and translate them.

the reason why university of oxford made the collections available online is that there are vast amounts of documents that need to be translated into english. The text in papyri were all written in handwriting so that’s make it hard to do it manually with the vast amount of documents at disposal and also the problem is that computers can’t really read human handwriting yet so it’d need human volunteers that wanted to help in translating and transcribing the papyri.

what will you get when translating this papyri is that you will know vast amount of valuable information that existed thousand of years ago, this information can help better understand of what’s life like back in the days before jesus christ.

so go to this website and help that oxford’s team in understanding the human history. :-)

my keyboard jammed

Benq laptop

Image via Wikipedia

so this morning when I turn on my laptop, the H button on my laptop was jammed. so I tried to find what the problem was. turned out that underneath the H button there was a small rock that keep jamming the button when I tried to push it. the small rock almost the size of a grain, so I use a small needle to push the small rock out. and the button finally worked flawlessly again. and I am so thankful of that.

so the moral of the story is that when you had a keyboard key that’s jammed there may be something that inhibit the button from pushing into the laptop.

always Becareful then. :-)
